Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a holistic form of medicine that involves the insertion of ultra-thin needles at strategic points in your skin. Depending on where they’re placed and how they’re controlled, these special needles may stimulate specific systems or relax certain areas of your body.

In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture helps restore a free flow of blood and a balance of vital energy, or “chi,” through the pathways of your body. In modern western medicine, it’s used to stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissues, enhance blood flow, and promote the release of pain-suppressing endorphins.

How can acupuncture help me?

Acupuncture is a gentle and effective way to address virtually any health condition, disorder, or complaint, ranging from chronic migraines and stress to seasonal allergies and gynecological problems.

By reducing pain and encouraging your body’s own internal healing mechanisms, acupuncture can successfully address multiple symptoms in a single treatment. And unlike drug therapy, it doesn’t come with unwanted side effects. It’s often used to manage or improve:

Musculoskeletal pain

Acupuncture can help resolve the underlying pain and dysfunction caused by sports injuries, overuse injuries, and wear-and-tear conditions like osteoarthritis. It’s particularly helpful for:

  • Chronic lower back pain
  • Persistent sciatica
  • Arthritis-related knee pain
  • Shoulder impingement syndrome
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

Acupuncture can be especially helpful for people with peripheral neuropathy, or nerve damage, as well as people with fibromyalgia (FM), or chronic musculoskeletal pain and tenderness.

Digestive conditions

As a leading holistic solution for common digestive issues like bloating, constipation, and indigestion, acupuncture soothes the digestive system and restores balance.

The treatment is so effective at relieving bothersome gastrointestinal symptoms that it can even be used to improve more serious digestive disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Crohn’s disease.

Mental health and sleep disorders

Acupuncture is an effective complementary solution for many common mental health issues, including:

  • Clinical depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Addiction disorders
  • Mood disorders

A broad range of sleep disorders, including insomnia, restless leg syndrome (RLS), and jet lag, are also highly responsive to acupuncture therapy.

What can I expect from acupuncture?

Just as your health condition, symptoms, and treatment goals are unique to you, acupuncture therapy is an individualized process that requires a highly personalized approach.

Using the information obtained during your initial medical assessment, Dr. Huang develops an exhaustive treatment plan that details the frequency and duration of your acupuncture care in addition to providing recommendations on beneficial supportive therapies.

Because acupuncture has a cumulative effect, many people benefit from having two treatments per week to begin with; as pain subsides and symptoms improve, you may only need to receive acupuncture weekly, every other week, monthly, or even seasonally, based on Dr. Huang’s re-evaluation.

Depending on your underlying health condition, you may also benefit from supportive therapies and treatments — physical therapy, restorative injections, lifestyle management, and behavior modification are just a few modalities that can enhance the effects of acupuncture and help you reach your goals more efficiently.
